Frank Horwill Training Group
The legendary Frank Horwill's training groups are still going strong at Battersea and all Serpentine members are welcome.
Frank Horwill coached over 50 international runners and further details of his achievements can be found in Frank's biography.
The training groups meet regularly on a Tuesday / Thursday evening and, depending on weekend races, there is also a Saturday morning session too.
What to expect
The Tuesday / Thursday evening groups meet over at the seating area of Battersea Track at 7.00pm sharp and you should be warmed up & ready to go. Some of the regulars do a 15 minute warm-up loop in the Park and start this from approx 6.30 - 6.40pm.
The sessions cater for both middle distance and endurance events and the focus is dictated by the time of year and the group's objectives. The content generally involves a healthy mix of endurance and speed with some conditioning aspects thrown in for good measure.
One of Frank's favourite mottos was "If speed is the name of the game, never get too far away from it" so they do tend to keep an element of this in year round, but Frank also valued hard work and commitment more than anything so don't be put off thinking these are just for the elite - if you are currently running at least 4 times a week and can comfortably cover a 10K in under 48 minutes then you'll benefit from these workouts as well.
The sessions themselves are set by Peter Thompson and more details on his philosophy and methods can be found here - http://www.newintervaltraining.com.
The legendary Saturday morning sessions are also generally based down at Battersea but, as stated above, they don't always happen because of races. If you like the idea of hard running interspersed with hopping, leapfrog and piggy back races then they are certainly for you. More details can be found by emailing the group below.
If you're interested in any of these sessions, please email the training group before coming down so they know to expect you. There is also a Horwill Harriers Yahoo e-group where the training sessions are published and futher details about this can be obtained from the group too.
