Club Handicap
The Serpentine Handicap
The Serpentine handicap is a race of 6,975 metres (4.335 miles) which is a course of twice round the Serpentine and Long Water, starting and finishing near the bandstand. Occasionally, work and events in the Royal Parks have caused the route to be modified e.g. in December and January because of Winter Wonderland.
Unlike other road races you may have taken part in, the start of the handicap is staggered according to individuals' past performances, so that all runners finish the race at about the same time. If all goes well, there is an exciting finish down the final straight. The race rewards not the fastest runner but the runner who performs best relative to their previous performance.
The history of the handicap and explanation of the handicap system make interesting reading. The Tom Hogshead Trophy is awarded at the end of the year (see past winners). The results of the handicap are published on the Serpentine website. You can also see the handicap course records.
Registration and race timings
The handicap is held on the first Saturday of each month. Registration takes place from 8.15am at the Bandstand, as shown on the map below, and is strictly limited to the first 100 entries. No entries will be accepted after 8.55am. New runners should arrive by 8.30am to allow for a pre-race briefing. There are toilets opposite that may be used for changing but note that you may not change in the toilets at the Serpentine Bar and Kitchen Café. The nearest tube stations are Marble Arch and Hyde Park Corner.

Notes
The handicap is for members of the Serpentine Running Club only. If you are not a member you can join online, but note that you must have joined by the Wednesday preceding a race.
The organisers at their discretion may change a competitor's start time if they believe it does not accurately reflect the runner's ability. Any runner suspected of intentionally performing below their ability in order to skew results may be disqualified from the handicap competition.
Finally, please note that we do not allow runners to wear headphones while competing in the race, as runners need to be able to hear marshal's instructions and/or vehicles approaching from behind. Anyone who fails to comply with race rules risks being disqualified.

Welfare
Welfare
Serpentine Running club takes the welfare of its members very seriously. We are obliged through our affiliation to various governing bodies to implement the policies and procedures that they have established.
Welfare Officers - contact us
The Welfare Officers will listen confidentially* to any issue that may arise, and endeavour to support your individual needs and well being. If you have any queries or concerns, we encourage you to contact one of the Welfare Officers below and discuss your concern directly with them. The Welfare Officers are Guy Regis and Jany Tsai and they are available to offer help and advice.
Guy Regis |
| Jany Tsai |
They can be reached at welfare@serpentine.org.uk or look in Serpiebase for other contact details. If none of the Welfare Officers are available, please get in touch with a member on the Committee and one of us will respond to you as soon as possible.
Welfare - what it means
The Club aims to create an environment where you feel safe and are able to participate in club events without being subject to any form of harassment, bullying, verbal or physical abuse or excessive pressure.
Welfare covers a wide range of issues such as safeguarding and protecting children, anti-bullying, equality, poor practice in coaching and disciplinary and grievance matters. The Club's Codes of Conduct and procedures for dealing with child protection concerns, other welfare issues or grievances are provided in Club Rules, Bylaws and grievance procedures. In addition, we have adopted the UKA Welfare and Child Protection policy and the latest version can be viewed here.
Welfare – what we expect from our members
It is everyone's responsibility to ensure the safety and enjoyment of all those who participate in club events.
Children and Vulnerable Adults
Any person with information of a disclosure, allegation or concern about the welfare of a child or vulnerable adult must immediately report to one of the Welfare Officers who will refer the matter to UKA’s CPLO or Home Country lead welfare officer, as appropriate. These concerns may arise due to:
- an individual disclosing that they are being abused
- the behaviour of an adult towards a child or vulnerable adult
- a number of indicators observed in a child or vulnerable adult over a period of time
Affiliated Bodies
* In order to provide the support for your needs and well being, the information shared with a Welfare Officer may be shared with other Welfare Officers and/or the Committee, but only on a need to know basis. Exceptions are also made, for example if you may present a danger of violence to others; or if there is a reasonable suspicion that you are likely to harm yourself unless protective measures are taken.

Affiliations to Governing Bodies
Affiliations to our Governing Bodies
England Athletics
England Athletics (EA) is the new governing body for athletics in England. They are primarily responsible for international level competiton but clubs must be affiliated if they want to compete in regional or national running, cross-country or track & field competition. Affiliation also provides insurance for us to hold our own races. We are affiliated for competition in road running, track & field, race walking, fell running and cross country.
Each member wishing to compete in these events must pay £10 in addition to the annual fee. The club passes this charge to EA in order to register that member because under the EA system, responsibility lies with clubs rather than individuals. Each registered member should receive an England Athletics membership card and license number.
Note: The EA membership system makes registration very difficult for a club of our size and therefore individual registration is subject to delays and errors. Members wishing to know their EA license number should contact England Athletics directly at:
Email: affiliation@athleticsservices.org.uk
Tel. 0121 713 8454
South of England Athletics Association
The SEAA is the former governing body for athletics in the south of England. It is still responsible for organising a number of competitions and leagues.
Triathlon England
Triathlon England governs triathlon in England as part of the British Triathlon Federation, responsible for governing triathlon across the UK. It also looks after duathlon and aquathlon. Serpentine are within the Triathlon London Region. Club affiliation provides insurance for us to hold our own races and gives members reduced rates for individual BTF membership. Note that Serpentine members must still become individual BTF members to avoid paying for a day license at each race – just quote your club name as "Serpentine".
Cycling Time Trials
CTT is the governing body for cycling time trials in the UK. In order to compete in time trials, competitors must be a member of an affiliated club. Serpentine is affiliated to CTT in the London West (H) region, so all you need to do is enter your chosen race.
Membership
Club Membership
The Serpentine Running Club was founded in 1982 by a group of runners who were training for the second London Marathon. Now, we have members of all standards and ages, and take part in road running, cross country, track & field, fell running, triathlons and other multi-sport events. We are based in the very centre of London, and we welcome many visitors to London, whether staying for a few days or a few years.
You may be a bit daunted about the thought of joining a running club if you have never been a member of one before. Don't be: we have members with a wide range of ability, age and commitment. Whatever your standard of fitness, you'll be more than welcome. You are bound to find someone in the club who is about the same standard as you. And if you are a complete beginner, we have a starter session on Saturdays, aimed at building confidence and providing company. Have a look at our Beginners' Guide to Running.
Our junior section is open to all 11-19 year-olds with a keen interest in athletics. We provide training, coaching and competition in a variety of track & field, cross-country and indoor sportshall events. Regardless of abilities and experience, enthusiasm and a willingness to learn is key.
The club is very cosmopolitan and social: many of our adult members will head to the pub after their run and we have some good parties. We also travel together to races at weekends, and sometimes for long weekends in the UK or Europe.
The best way to find out if you want to join us is to come along to a convenient club run. You don't have to join the club to come running with us for the first time: why not come along and see if you like it? The Training section of the website sets out the details of our regular training sessions (running, cycling and swimming) and there are maps showing you how to get there. You can find out how to join the club here.
This section - Membership - includes lots of information about the club:

Club News and Other Mailing Lists
The club has a mailing list system, fully integrated with our website, which is the primary method of disseminating 'official' club information. These are one-way mailing lists that only a limited number of organisers within the club will be able to mail to, so you will not receive any spam.
These lists are separate to the yahoo egroup that we use for unmoderated member to member chat.
What lists are there?
The mailing lists you can choose from are as follows.

On that page you can tick/un-tick the boxes next to the list that you want to receive emails from the club. You can also select whether to receive email in plain text or html format (with graphics).
The email address used for the list is your primary email address as listed on your profile in Serpiebase so you will need to keep your email address up to date. You need to be a club member to sign-up to the lists and note that anyone whose membership has expired for more than 6 weeks will be automatically removed from all lists so make sure you renew your membership promptly!
Is there a digest version of the mailing lists?

2013-03-03 Centurion Grand Prix 5 Mile Series
Club Championships
Club Championships
The Serpentine Club Championships are a series of races with trophies for the male, female and age-graded winners of each race. The 1k and 5k races are part of the "grand-prix" (which also includes the 1-mile and 3000m track races) and are organised by the club so there is no advance entry – you just turn up on the day. The other races are open races and you must enter them yourself.
To count for club championship competitions you must:
- Be a first claim member of Serpentine Running Club
- Have entered under your own name
- Compete wearing club colours
The Serpentine Age-Graded Championship uses performance factors to calibrate Club Championship race times, to put everyone (male and female, younger and older) on a level playing field. The overall championship will be awarded to the first claim member with the highest average percentage from any 5 of the championship races (road and track).
The results of the club championships are published in the results database.
Any marathon run this year will count towards the Club Championships. When inputting marathon times in the results database the official time should be used, and for championship contenders this will be checked at the end of the year against published results.
The dates of the club championships are listed below. They are also included in the Serpentine Planner where they are highlighted in yellow.
